Books I read in 2014

I read 26 books this year, or about 1 book every couple weeks. I would love to read 1 book every week, but I don’t see how to make that happen with my schedule. As it is now, I read for about 20 minutes on my lunch break (if I take one), and 20 minutes at night before bed. Ah, well.

Here are the books I read this year:

2014 reads 1 2014 reads 2 2014 reads 3 2014 reads 4

My favorites were:
Special Topics in Calamity Physics by Marisha Pessl
The Hand that First Held Mine by Maggie O’Farrell
The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert
Remember Me Like This by Bret Anthony Johnston

Other good ones:
The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker
The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach
The History of Us by Leah Stewart
The Imperfectionists by Tom Rachman
Liars and Saints by Maile Meloy
Night Film by Marisha Pessl
Dear Life by Alice Munro
Friendly Fire by Kathryn Chetkovich
Just After Sunset by Stephen King
Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott
Heads in Beds by Jacob Tomsky
Born to Run by Christopher McDougall
Eat & Run by Scott Jurek
Mile Markers by Kristin Armstrong
How to Disappear by Frank Ahearn (I read this for research purposes, I swear)
The Middle Place by Kelly Corrigan

Didn’t love:
A Gate at the Stairs by Lorrie Moore (I prefer her short stories)
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn (good premise, then very convoluted)
The Good Luck of Right Now by Matthew Quick (kinda silly)
Spooner by Pete Dexter (kinda dull)
Telex from Cuba by Rachel Kushner (kinda disjointed)
I Want to Show You More by Jamie Quatro (kinda out there)

  2. I loved “The Signature of All Things” as well. Especially the first chapter (the whirlwind telling of her father’s life story) and the the last third (her travels). I’ll have to check out your other faves.
