“Home is where your story begins”

Ever wondered where your favorite author lived? Not the state or the town, but the house. I have. For some reason, houses have always fascinated me. When I was a kid, writing my first stories, one of my primary tasks (after naming my main character) was to draw a sketch of the character’s house. For me, a home says so much about a person. And I think it says so much about a writer. When I moved out on my own, my mom gave me this little wooden plaque that says, “Home is where your story begins.” That sounded about right so I’ve had it on the wall above my kitchen sink ever since.

I must not be alone in my sentimentalization of houses because I stumbled upon a site dedicated to an interesting niche — writershouses.com. Check it out if you want to see where some of our best authors were living when they thought up their stories, or wrote their stories, or just lived the lives that inspired their stories.

Washington Irving

Louisa May Alcott

Nathaniel Hawthorne

Emily Dickinson

Dashiell Hammett

  1. Yes, PLEASE come to MA, sooner rather than later–Emily Dickinson’s house is just at 25-min. drive from mine. 🙂
